Birdwatching, long known for its calming effects, may also bring lasting changes to the brain, according to a 2026 study published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

    Researchers found that expert birdwatchers have measurably different brain structure in areas linked to attention, perception, and memory. These differences appear to last into old age and may help protect against cognitive decline.

    What the study found

    The research team studied 29 expert birdwatchers and compared them to 29 people with little or no birding experience. Using brain imaging, they measured “mean diffusivity,” which shows how tightly packed brain tissue is. Lower numbers indicate more compact, organized tissue.

    Results showed that expert birders had significantly more compact brain tissue in frontoparietal and posterior cortical regions. These areas are tied to attention, perception, and visual processing. The same regions were active during brain scans when experts worked on difficult bird identification tasks. More compact brain structure was linked to better accuracy in identifying birds. These structural advantages persisted even in older experts.

    Why birdwatching works

    Birdwatching requires sustained learning. Experts identify hundreds of species by visual differences, songs, calls, flight patterns, and habitat. They constantly process multiple streams of information, make quick decisions, and build a growing mental library. This kind of complex learning is what neuroscientists say drives neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to reorganize itself based on experience.

    The brain regions that showed changes in expert birders are the same areas that typically decline with age. Attention networks, visual processing centers, and memory systems all tend to weaken over time. But the expert birders in this study appeared to resist that pattern.

    Researchers point to “cognitive reserve,” the idea that enriched brain structure can act as a buffer against age-related decline. Older birders also showed better memory for information linked to their area of expertise. Their brains had built specialized pathways that remained strong even as other cognitive functions slowed.

    Accessible at any age

    Birdwatching can be adapted to any fitness level and continued well into older age. It combines cognitive challenge with time outdoors, which has its own benefits for mental health. Many birders also take part in group outings and citizen science projects, adding social engagement, another factor in healthy brain aging.

    The study included participants across a wide age range, and the benefits of expertise appeared even in older adults. The brain retains its ability to change throughout life, the researchers noted.
