A new study published in the journal Cell Metabolism examines how exposure to natural daylight indoors affects blood sugar control in people with type 2 diabetes. The research suggests that working near a window during the day may help stabilize glucose levels.

    Light acts as a key signal for the body’s internal clock, or circadian rhythm, which regulates processes like sleep, hormone release, and glucose metabolism. Disruption to this rhythm has previously been linked to insulin resistance and metabolic disease.

    Researchers designed a study to test if natural light exposure alone could make a difference. They recruited 13 adults with type 2 diabetes for two separate 4.5-day sessions in a controlled office setting.

    In one session, participants worked at desks by large windows. In the other, windows were covered and only standard office lighting was used. All other factors, including meals, activity, sleep schedules, and medications, were kept identical between the sessions.

    The team used continuous glucose monitors, measured whole-body fuel use, and analyzed muscle tissue samples to track metabolic changes.

    While average glucose levels were similar under both conditions, the time spent within a normal blood sugar range was greater with natural daylight. Glucose levels showed fewer sharp spikes and drops throughout the day when participants were near windows.

    The body’s fuel use also changed. During daylight exposure, participants burned more fat and used less carbohydrate for energy, indicating improved metabolic flexibility.

    Analysis of muscle biopsies revealed that natural light helped better align the activity of clock-related genes with the time of day. This suggests daylight helped keep muscle cells on a proper schedule, improving their efficiency at processing nutrients.

    The study points to light as an often-overlooked factor in metabolic health. For those looking to apply the findings, researchers suggest prioritizing morning and daytime light by working near windows, taking short outdoor breaks, and reducing bright light exposure in the evening to maintain a strong daily rhythm.

    The research adds to the understanding that managing blood sugar involves not just diet and exercise, but also the environmental signals the body receives. For individuals with type 2 diabetes, something as simple as increased daylight exposure during work hours may offer a supportive metabolic benefit.
