Many people notice their skin looking dull and tired during seasonal changes, due to dry air, a busy schedule, or weather shifts that increase sensitivity. One way to address this is by increasing antioxidant intake. Antioxidants help fight free radicals, calm inflammation, and improve the overall appearance of lackluster skin by supporting it from the inside out.
Vitamin C and Vitamin E are well-known for their role in collagen production. Vitamin C helps the skin’s fibroblasts synthesize collagen, while Vitamin E protects against collagen cross-linking, which can make collagen hard and stiff and lead to skin aging. These two vitamins work together. Research shows that Vitamin E can increase Vitamin C’s effectiveness by up to eight times, and Vitamin C helps regenerate Vitamin E after it fights free radicals. Both are strong antioxidants that reduce free radical damage and ease inflammation, which can improve skin luminosity. Vitamin C has been shown to reduce hyperpigmentation, brighten the complexion, decrease moisture loss, and protect against UV-induced damage.
Astaxanthin is often called the “King of the Carotenoids” and is found in red algae and marine life like salmon. It is considered one of the most effective antioxidants. While it appears in skin care products, research suggests it works best as a supplement. One study found that astaxanthin improved skin wrinkles, age spot size, and skin texture. In a double-blind clinical trial, participants reported better moisture levels, especially around the eyes, along with improved elasticity and skin tone. Another study showed it can help the skin retain water, improving moisture and radiance.
Blood orange extract is a less common ingredient but is gaining attention due to new research. A randomized, double-blind, controlled study found that participants who took 100 mg daily saw a 9.2% increase in skin radiance after 14 days and an 18.5% increase after 56 days. The same study also measured wrinkle depth and found a 6.9% decrease in the deepest wrinkles by the end of the study.
Increasing antioxidant intake is a direct way to address dull skin. These free-radical fighters can improve skin from the inside out. While getting a variety of antioxidants from food is beneficial, these three options are among the most effective. For those who cannot get enough through diet, supplements are an alternative.
